The Existing Ministries of Helping Hands

Looking at the city of Athens as a whole and seeing the thousands of refugees from around the world we can say like our Lord Jesus Christ, …Truly, the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few.  In spite of this fact, the Lord has taken our "loaves and fishes" and is in the process of multiplying them.  Some examples of what the Lord has done in the ministry here:

  • Christians from various denominations working and fellowshipping together (no small thing in a city of churches which are very exclusive and somewhat divisive)
  • The establishment of a multi-purpose ministry center that not only helps meet physical and spiritual needs (i.e. food, clothing, evangelistic and discipleship Bible studies, library, video presentations, kids clubs, language classes, Tea House ministry, etc.), but also provides a wide variety of ministry opportunities into which we can more easily mobilize volunteer
    workers
  • Tons of clothing distributed to needy refugee men, women, and children
  • Annual Christmas parties have been sponsored by the team since 1992; good and plentiful food, special music and decorations, clear and creative Gospel presentations, evangelistic literature, as well as meaningful gifts are always a part of this holiday tradition
  • A weekly evangelistic soup kitchen ministry, (which has now grown into the Tea House ministry three times each week), not only physically and spiritually provided food for the hungry but also was a model followed by other ministries
  • Multiple special outreaches at the refugee camps; busloads of believers and food supplies were brought to people in desperate circumstances and the Gospel was shared through drama, music, friendship evangelism, literature and Bibles, and the preaching of the Word
  • English and Greek classes are offered at no charge to the refugees, which not only equip them with necessary language skills but also incorporate the Word of God within the curriculum and build bridges for evangelism
  • Three times each week, the Tea House ministry operates where refugees come to relax, drink tea and have a snack, play games, build friendships, and hear the Gospel
  • Evangelistic parties that focus on one ethnic group and are planned and implemented with fellowships of that distinct nationality or language
  • Evangelistic video presentations such as the "Jesus" video in various languages
  • An International Believers Fellowship made up of people from around the world, which meets weekly for an informal time of worship, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship
  • A prison ministry that is in partnership with a local international church and helps meet spiritual and material needs of the foreigners at the men's and women's prisons
  • A small-scale shelter ministry that temporarily houses up to 25 refugees at a time (while ministering to them spiritually)
  • Shower ministry for homeless refugees
  • English classes for children and women at a refugee camp
  • Partnership with E.M.E. in sponsoring the International School of Ministry/Athens
  • Small group and one-on-one Bible studies (both evangelistic and discipleship), hospitality, friendship evangelism, teaching and preaching at ethnic fellowships, leadership development, English tutoring, some street-witnessing, and special retreats have also been ways we have attempted to combine demonstration with proclamation of the Gospel here in Athens
