Helping Hands was established in 1993 as a Greek-registered, non-profit organization of Greek and international Christians whose stated purpose is to help meet the physical and social needs of the refugees and ethnic minority groups in the greater Athens area.
Helping Hands presently has a three-member Board of Directors.
President: Rev. Meletis Meletiadis, a Greek believer who pastors
the Greek Evangelical Church of the city of Bolos. Secretary: Polixeni
Boukis, a Greek woman who is a member of the 3rd Greek Evangelical
Church of Athens. Treasurer: Themis Sirinides, a Greek-American
who works with International teams on a Full-time basis. Advisory
member: Kallie Skaife d’Engerthrope, a Greek woman who is a member
of the International Teams. Advisory member: Dimitris Lekkas, a
Greek believer who is pasturing the Independent Church "Athinon".
Rev. Nikos Stefanidis, a Greek believer, voluntarily served part-time
as the Associate Director of this ministry for 3 1/2 years. As of
September 2003 Nikos became the Executive Director on a full-time
basis. He has been important link to the Greek community, both in
terms of recruitment of Greek volunteers to participate in the ministries
of Helping Hands, as well as representing a vital step toward the
ultimate goal of nationalization of this entire ministry. He also
has participated by doing ministry presentations at churches around
Greece and abroad, helping identify vision and goals for the ministry,
helping plan activities and special outreach events, and helping
conduct regular membership meetings of Helping Hands.
Helping Hands is interdenominational in focus and constituency.
While explicitly Christian, it is able to network not only with
the various Christian churches and social service groups but also
with secular organizations that share the common purpose of meeting
the material and social needs of the refugees.
